The silence that followed Eva’s proclamation sent a chill down Maceo’s spine. He looked past her to where Tristen and Big Pete stood, taking in their hard expressions. Maceo cursed, knowing he was going to have to explain himself and the reasons for the secrecy about who he was, but when he glanced back at Eva, he knew that could wait. His childhood friend had shown up after five years of her thinking he was dead. There was so much for the both of them to catch up on.

One of the men, whose name Maceo didn’t know, spoke. “I’m thinking maybe we should hold off on this meeting, especially with this new development.” There was a murmur of agreement amongst the crowd, and Maceo finally felt the weight of his bloodline and name fall to his shoulders.

Maceo snuck a glance at the men watching him with a hopefully gleam in their eyes. The rightful heir to a throne he’d been promised was found alive and well, which meant Claudia’s rule was officially over. The prodigal son brought back from the dead had every claim to what she was currently ruling over, and he had an eerie feeling she wouldn’t just hand it over.

Do you really want to rule?

The thought had snuck into his mind, planting the seeds of doubt that hadn’t sprung up since he first relocated out here. He would never be the king his father was, and he wasn’t even sure he wanted to play ruler over all of Miami. It had been so long since he’d been around the De la Cova name that he wasn’t sure he was even equipped to take the reins from Claudia. His father had tried to show him the business, but Maceo had been a rebellious teen, choosing to live outside of what was expected of a prince.

Did these men expect him to rush back into Miami and demand Claudia step down?

As much as he wanted to go back home, he wasn’t sure he wanted to go home and be a king.

The men started trickling out, only stopping when Tristen spoke up. “I think it goes without saying that this news that Maceo De la Cova is alive stays here. We can’t afford to tip Claudia off that the heir everyone thought was dead is in fact very much still breathing.”

There was another murmur of agreement before everyone except Big Pete and Tristen left the room. The sound of the door closing was so loud it was as if a bomb had gone off and the four of them were the only ones left with the aftermath.

Maceo refocused on Eva, feeling her hands grip on his shirt and arms as if she was afraid he wasn’t really there. He was almost afraid to blink himself, thinking this was all just some dream he concocted so close to the anniversary of his father’s death. It was almost too perfect that she was here now, rescuing him from the shadows that his life had become.
